Loops of the loom is an exhibition by Cécile Babiole presenting a new body of work developed during a residency at LABgamerz. Through both anthropological and technological research into weaving, the artist proposes a contemporary reflection and experience around the practices that underpin the historic tapestry collection in the former Archbishop’s Palace. Drawing inspiration from the weavings of prehistoric matriarchal societies and the magnetic RAMs of early computers, Babiole weaves electrical wires capable of transmitting audio signals and translating patterns into sound scores; with the aid of a GPS, she weaves a soccer pitch that she runs up and down; she also weaves a radio antenna to broadcast the exhibition’s audio guide… A techno-feminist approach to this knowledge and know-how, often invisible and relegated to the status of decoration.
