“Microplastique” is an interactive urban art installation that transforms the audience into living, mutating microplastic organisms through motion capture and real-time video projection. Part game, part provocation, the work invites participants to confront the invisible presence of microplastics—by embodying them.
Invisible to the naked eye, microplastics are difficult to track and nearly impossible to eliminate. The installation *Microplastics* makes the invisible visible. It uses art and physical interaction to help the public grasp the scale and impact of a crisis that is otherwise abstract, elusive, and overwhelming.
At the heart of the installation is a large illuminated screen connected to a motion-capture camera. When participants enter the field of view, their gestures and movements are translated into animated, shifting forms reminiscent of microplastic particles—floating, twisting, and multiplying throughout the space. The visual transformations are generated in real time using AI and volumetric imaging, turning each visitor into a living portrait of synthetic pollution. Their “bodies” become fields of luminous debris, responding to their gestures with fluid, microbial movements.
The visual experience is accompanied by an immersive, audio-responsive soundscape composed of electroacoustic and underwater sounds. The soundscape reacts to each participant’s movements, evoking both the allure and the uncanny strangeness of the deep sea—a space increasingly invaded by microplastic waste.
Allison Moore
Allison Moore is a multimedia artist who works in the field of immersive cinema. Based in Montreal (Tiohtià:ke), she holds a Master of Fine Arts (Film) from Concordia University. His work has been presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale, the Grand Théâtre du Québec, the Society for Art and Technology of Montreal, Ars Electronica, Tokyo Arts and Space, MUTEK, and ISEA. His recent projects draw inspiration from digital storytelling, video mapping of landscapes and architecture, fulldome, site-specific public art, and performance art. Moore’s works reinterpret and reconstruct the world as a metaphorical landscape in which sentient beings interact with their allegorical macrocosm. Moore works as a freelance editor, composer, and animator, and currently teaches part-time at Concordia University’s Film School.
