“Beach Machine” is an installation that continuously sculpts the shape of Mana Island, a laboratory island off the coast of New Zealand where scientists are attempting to attract birds using sculptures modeled after them. It is also the story of Nigel, a solitary bird who tirelessly courts a concrete counterpart there. With a mechanical, programmed motion, the machine attempts to protect the island from rising waters and erosion. It inexorably sweeps along its contours to keep the shoreline in place.
Miguel Miceli
Miguel Miceli is an Italian-Spanish interdisciplinary artist. His practice centers on the transformation of the landscape, at the intersection of the technological sublime, the occult, and ecology. By weaving connections between ancestral traditions and modernity, he shifts the focus away from an anthropocentric perspective through speculative narratives and evolving installations. He often works on the fringes of territories, seeking out elements that carry personal and collective memories and challenge the dualisms between nature and culture, subject and object, dream and reality.
