There is a sense of fatigue with the catastrophe, or perhaps with the way it is portrayed: as an inevitability, as an insurmountable barrier, as the only possible truth. Has dystopia become the official realism of our age, governing our imaginations, shaping our emotions and paralysing our desires?
The works brought together here reject this dead end. Not out of naivety, not out of denial: they are aware of rising sea levels, land erosion, water pollution, species extinction and climate change. They face these issues head-on. But they refuse to let these issues have the final say. They are part of what the solarpunk movement—which emerged in the early 2010s at the crossroads of science fiction, political ecology and concrete utopia—has proposed as an alternative vision: imagining optimistic futures. Not a distant, self-contained utopia, but – as the movement puts it – a call to action today, to design, create and imagine a better world right now.
